NBN State League Round 7 Preview

Mat Fox Previews Round 7 of the NBN State League

Match of the Round
Broadmeadow Magic FC v Edgeworth Eagles
Wanderers Oval
Sunday 20th May 2:45pm
Broadmeadow Magic welcomes Edgeworth Eagles to Wanderers Oval in the Match of the Round on Sunday.
Edgeworth recorded their first win of the season against Newcastle Jets Youth last week and will gain confidence going into this encounter.
Edgeworth now sit on five points and can climb even higher with a win this week as they face Valentine Phoenix next week who are currently level in points, resulting in a crucial couple of games for the Eagles.
Broadmeadow Magic faces the Jets Youth for the first time following this match against Edgeworth in an important run for themselves also.
Magic defeated Edgeworth 3-1 in all three fixtures last season, the last was on the final day of the season, which knocked Edgeworth out of finals contention with plenty of controversy taking place at Jack McLaughlan Oval.
Broadmeadow Coach Rob Virgilli said “You can’t underestimate them, we’re anticipating a very tight game and looking forward to it”.
It will be another massive game between these sides, there should be plenty of good football on display and the result will be crucial for both sides.
Newcastle Jets Youth v Charlestown City Blues FC
Lisle Carr Oval
Saturday 19th May 2:30pm
Newcastle Jets Youth will meet Charlestown City Blues for the first time this season at Lisle Carr Oval on Saturday.
It looks set to be an exciting match with Newcastle Jets Youth coming off their first loss of the season last week, going down 2-1 to Edgeworth Eagles.
Charlestown City Blues are also coming off a loss after their 3-2 defeat to Hamilton Olympic, and will be looking to return to Lisle Carr Oval with a win this week.
Both sides have set the NBN State League alight since entering the competition in 2012 with the competition expanded to ten teams, Jets Youth and Charlestown currently sit in first and third spot respectively.
The Jets Youth have gone in as favourites to many of their fixtures this season; however a change in coach and a slump in form creates a level playing field going into this one.
It will be a good test for the young side that has more than proved their ability to rise in close matches this season. They came from behind against Olympic and almost snatched a draw against Edgeworth despite being reduced to ten men.
Look for a physical approach by the Blues who have a very experienced line up, a strategy that worked well for Hamilton in Round 5 before going a man down in the second half.
Many teams have struggled to match it with the Jets’ speed and intensity, but the Blues are another outfit that play an intense game and have put teams on the back foot throughout the season, it should be a great game.
A win for Charlestown City would put them level on points with the Newcastle Youth Jets as this match presents a massive head to head battle between these sides.
Valentine Phoenix FC v Lake Macquarie City FC
Cahill Oval
Sunday 20th May 2:30pm
Valentine Phoenix welcomes Lake Macquarie City to Cahill Oval this Sunday.
Just one point separates Valentine Phoenix and Lake Macquarie City as they sit eighth and ninth on the ladder, both looking for three points to stay in touch with the middle of the table.
Both sides suffered defeat in Round 6 with Valentine Phoenix being very unfortunate to go down 2-1 to South Cardiff after having the better of possession and chances, conceding late in the game to a goal from long distance.
Lake Macquarie City went down by a single goal to Broadmeadow Magic and has also had an unlucky run of late, with only the one competition win this year.
Valentine Phoenix Coach Lindsay Tapp has been pleased with his side’s performance, but knows they need to convert on their chances saying, “That’s three games now we have lead and haven’t come away with it, I don’t have any problems with the way we are playing, but we need to put the knife through them”.
Lake Macquarie City has conceded 14 goals, and only West Wallsend has conceded more thus far this season. Coach Graham Schofield said the third goal against Magic was due to a “lapse in concentration,” and will be looking to make their defence hard to break down this weekend.
With both sides at the foot of the table despite playing better football than their position suggests, in such a tight competition there is little separating the sides each week, and they will both be looking to get things right and walk away with a win.
Hamilton Olympic v Weston Workers
Darling Street Oval
Sunday 20th May 2:30pm
Hamilton Olympic host Weston Workers at Darling Street Oval this Sunday.
Both sides are coming off a win with Olympic defeating Charlestown City Blues away from home last week, and Weston Workers knocked over West Wallsend 4-0 at Thomas & Coffey Park.
Weston Workers recorded three wins over Hamilton Olympic last season with a 1-0, and two 2-0 score lines. Weston kept a clean sheet in all three matches and Hamilton Olympic will be out to spoil that record at home.
Just one point separates each side with Weston Workers in fifth place on nine points, and Hamilton Olympic in sixth on eight points.
With Edgeworth and Valentine Phoenix behind them on five points, and South Cardiff and Charlestown in front of them on twelve, a win for either side would put them closer to the top of the table and extend the gap behind them.
Hamilton Olympic Coach Michael Bolch said “we’re travelling well at the moment, we need to clean up defensively, but I can’t knock the boy’s commitment, they’re playing for each other”.
Hamilton had a midweek clash with South Cardiff in the NNSWF State Cup, prevailing after a penalty shoot out was needed to break the 2-2 deadlock and they will hope to freshen up in time for a big game at home.
Weston Workers Coach Darren Elkin said his side “will continue those things” that gave them a comfortable win last week, and continue to push towards the front runners in the competition.
West Wallsend SFC v South Cardiff
Varley Park
Sunday 20th May 2:30pm
West Wallsend returns to Varley Park looking for their first points of the season against South Cardiff.
They went down to Weston Workers 4-0 last week and will look for a return to form at home this weekend.
South Cardiff went down to Hamilton Olympic in a penalty shoot out in their midweek State Cup fixture, West Wallsend will be hoping they can get one over their opponents with their heavy schedule in recent weeks.
The Gunners now sit fourth on the table with four wins and two losses this season, equal with Charlestown City Blues and just behind leaders Newcastle Jets Youth and Broadmeadow Magic.
South Cardiff Coach Steve Piggott said after last week’s match, “You’re always happy to get a win when you don’t play well; we were tired and sluggish after a lot of matches”.
After another midweek fixture, they will hope to freshen up and play good football after a heavy schedule.

Maitland FC have been awarded the April NNSWF Play Maker Award for their season launch flag...

The ceremony involves the clubs under 6 players that are playing at home that day carrying the clubs unfurled flag in a traditional manner, where it is presented to the clubs president who raises the flag to signal the start of football at Maitland FC.

NNSWF Play Maker Awards recognise those clubs who, like a good play maker in any team, have a vision, can create opportunities and have the ability to have a positive impact on the outcome of the game for their team. These clubs in Northern NSW have this same degree of vision and enthusiasm for seeing the game continue to grow in their area.
NNSWF Play Maker Awards are an amazing opportunity for clubs to promote their off-field initiatives.
NNSWF will identify and share stories submitted by clubs with the NNSW network, encouraging others to introduce similar initiatives. The most outstanding club initiative from each month will be determined by a panel of Northern NSW Representatives and the club will be rewarded with 10 Jabulani World Cup Glider footballs.

Herald WPL Round 9 Preview

Sarah Kane Previews Round 9 of the Herald Women's Premier League

Saturday 19th May
Macquarie Field
2.00pm
Match of the Round
Lake Macquarie City FC v Football Mid North Coast
Match of the Round for Round 9 of the Herald Women’s Premier League will see home team and competition front-runners Lake Macquarie City FC challenge Football Mid North Coast.
The last time these two teams met Lake Macquarie came out just in front with the final score line reading 3-2.
This was an achievement for the young team from Port Macquarie as the score was locked at 2-2 and half time and it was a goal from Tracy Baker in the final 15 minutes of the game that put Lake Macquarie ahead.
Both these teams are coming off a win from Round 8 and are looking to take home another three points this weekend.
Lake Macquarie defeated Merewether 3-0 last weekend after playing 30 minutes of the game with only ten players on the pitch.
Player/Coach Kate Hensman was happy with the result but felt there were aspects of the game that needed work during upcoming training sessions.
Football Mid North Coast came away with a win against Valentine on their home ground last weekend and is looking to continue this winning streak against Lake Macquarie this weekend.
Coach Terry Burn believes that Lake Macquarie is beatable and their draw against Charlestown in Round 5 of the competition proved they can be beaten.
Burn is looking for a “big win” this weekend and is hoping to come away with the points.
Currently in second last position on seven points, Burn said they need to take as many points away from the games from now on to remain in touch with the top four.
The Football Mid North Coast girls were happy with the win last weekend, but not so much with their performance; however this will work in their favour as they look to continue a winning streak and take home the three points against the competition favourites.
This game will definitely be a close match as Football Mid North Coast look to take home the three points against first placed Lake Macquarie.
Saturday 19th May
Macquarie Field
10.00am
Adamstown Rosebud JFC v Valentine FC
Round 9 of the Herald Women’s Premier League will kick off at 10.00am Saturday the 19th of May with the first match for the day between Adamstown Rosebud JFC and Valentine FC.
The last time these two teams took to the pitch, it was Adamstown who took home the three points after defeating Valentine 4-1.
Adamstown are currently in second position on the competition ladder and are looking to continue their winning streak from last weekend in the hopes of gaining first position over Lake Macquarie.
Last weekend saw Adamstown take home the three points after defeating Charlestown City Blues FC 3-0 at Port Macquarie.
In what started off as a slow game for Adamstown, Meaghan McElligot, Ashley Wilson and Amber Nielson capitalised on their attacking play to put away three goals for the red and green.
So far this season Adamstown have played great football and with some quality and talented players in the squad they are definitely a team to beat.
After a disruptive start to the season for Valentine they are yet to win a game and put a point on the ladder.
Round 8 saw another loss for the team after Football Mid North Coast defeated them 2-0 in what ended in a very close and exciting match.
As disappointing as the result was for Valentine, the game was certainly a positive for the team as it was their best game of football so far this season.
Valentine FC are the youngest squad in the competition, but there is talent amongst the players and last weekend proved they were starting to come together as a team and will be real competitors for the remainder of the season.
Valentine Coach, Mick Day, was very pleased with the performance of his girls last weekend and believes it was a turning point in the season for the young team.
Coming up against Adamstown this weekend will definitely be a challenge for the girls, but he is confident his girls will be able to perform.
Saturday 19th May
Macquarie Field
12.00pm
Merewether United FC v Charlestown City Blues FC
The second match for Round 9 of the Herald Women’s Premier League will see third place Merewether United FC take on fourth place Charlestown City Blues FC.
When these two teams last met, Merewether came out on top after beating Charlestown 3-1.
Both teams are coming off a loss after Lake Macquarie defeated Merewether 3-0 in Round 9 and Adamstown beat Charlestown 3-0.
Merewether started the game strong as Lake Macquarie took to the pitch with only ten players for the beginning.
This gave them some early shots on goal, but with Lake Macquarie’s first grade goalkeeper, Connie Osborne, coming back from injury, Osborne was on top of her game.
This was a disappointing result for Merewether, but they are currently sitting in third position with twelve points on the ladder which shows they are a competitive and talented team in the competition.
Charlestown went down to Adamstown, but they started the game as the better team which was a positive aspect Coach Kelvin Faith could take away from the game.
Sitting in fourth position on eleven points, Charlestown are following closely behind Merewether, which is sure to make this match a tough but exciting game for both teams.
Faith is confident that his girls can perform to their best ability and if they play the good football they have in previous weeks he believes they can take home the three points.
With a big training session planned for tonight, Faith will be focusing on both defensive and attacking plays and positioning of his players.
There will also be a strong focus on maintaining possession of the ball under pressure.
Faith said his team pulled up well after travelling to Port Macquarie last weekend and is pleased that he will have his full squad available for selection this weekend.
This match between Merewether and Charlestown is sure to be an entertaining second game for Round 9.

Competing at the national championships in Canberra last month she did her club, zone and family proud. Although only 13, Savannah now plays in the FFNC grade 14 1st division mixed comp for Byron Bay FC as well as the FFNC 14 girls rep team competing in the Queensland state youth league.

The surge in demand for more football from existing, former and new players has pressed NNSWF to...

Information about off season participation activities including Summer 6’s, Special Competitions and Special Tournaments has now been posted on Northern NSW Football’s website and distributed to clubs.
You can view the Expression of Interest document and download the Application form

NNSWF’s CEO David Eland said “Society is constantly changing, and as a sport we must continue to strive to meet the needs of an ever increasing number of potential players who can’t for a host of reasons commit to our traditional winter competitions. The off season activities aim to provide more people with more opportunities to play more football. They’re also a great opportunity for motivated clubs that have access to a facility in the off season to further serve their community and raise valuable funds”
NNSWF is confident that changes to the structure of registration fees which make it cheaper for players already registered in winter competitions, will encourage more players to participate year round.
Clubs have until mid June to express their interest in conducting any off season activity and NNSWF is aiming to complete the sanctioning process by 29 June.
“We’ve commenced the process much earlier this year to ensure that we have more time to market the various activities to potential participants. NNSWF will utilise the new integrated website network, competition management system and the online registration system to promote the various off season participation opportunities” Eland said

Herald WPL Round 8 Review

Sarah Kane Reviews Round 8 of the Herald Women's Premier League.

Sunday 13th May
Wayne Richards Park
10.00am
Match of the Round
Merewether United FC v Lake Macquarie City FC
The Match of the Round for Round 8 of the Herald Women’s Premier League saw Lake Macquarie City FC continue their winning streak after defeating Merewether United FC 3-0.
With not a cloud in the sky and a slight breeze, conditions were perfect for the games at Wayne Richards Park in Port Macquarie.
Lake Macquarie started the game short with only ten players taking to the pitch for kick-off.
This gave Merewether the upper hand early on, leading to an early shot on goal from young-gun Georgia Amess. The shot was saved by Connie Osborne, Lake Macquarie’s number one keeper, who was playing her first game back from injury.
Rhali Dobson of Merewether also started strongly in the attacking third with a close shot on goal, but Osborne was in top form and kept the ball from hitting the back of the net.
After arriving late to the game, Tara McMinn joined Lake Macquarie on the field to give them 11 players on the pitch.
In the 20th minute Lake Macquarie had a chance to put a point on the scoreboard after a rough tackle on Hannah Brewer in the penalty area and a dot shot was awarded.
Player/Coach Kate Hensman stepped up to take the shot, but Merewether goalkeeper Ainsley Buchanan got a hand to the ball, and after a follow-up chance from Kaitlin Radstaak of Lake Macquarie, the ball sailed over the cross bar.
Merewether continued to have chances on goal, but did not capitalise on any of their shots.
The first goal for the game came in the 29th minute after a beautiful long-range shot from Hannah Brewer caught Buchanan off-guard and found the back of the net put Lake Macquarie ahead.
Lake Macquarie was awarded another penalty after Tara Andrews was brought down in the box in the 35th minute.
Andrews took the shot herself and put Lake Macquarie two goals ahead with a textbook finish.
The scoring did not finish here for Lake Macquarie with the final goal for the game coming after Hensman made an attacking play down the side in the 40th minute that ended with a shot on goal.
Buchanan got a hand to the ball but it bounced over her head and into the back of the net.
The first half came to a close with Lake Macquarie three goals ahead of Merewether.
As the second half began, Lakes continued their attacking form and held the majority of possession for the rest of the match.
Hannah Brewer felt the brunt of another rough challenge in the 70th minute. She then went to the sideline to recover, which again left Lake Macquarie with only ten players on the field.
Brewer returned to the field ten minutes later to play out the rest of the match.
As the final whistle blew the second half remained goalless, with Lake Macquarie taking home the three points.
Hensman was happy with the win, but felt there were positives and negatives to take away from the game.
Hensman believed her team played well in patches, but said there will be a focus on playing consistently for the full 90 minutes in training sessions this week.
Only having ten players for at least 30 minutes of the game and still coming away with the win shows her team are real competitors throughout the competition.
Hensman was in good spirits despite missing a penalty, and she said, “That’s just the way it goes”, with a smile on her face.
Merewether assistant coach, Lisa Rowland, was happy with the result as Merewether had a tough preparation leading up to the game against Lake Macquarie.
Injuries are starting to have an effect on Merewether, which has led to more of a focus on defensive work throughout training sessions.
Rowland said two of Lake Macquarie’s goals were from silly mistakes in the box, which was disappointing, but doesn’t cast doubt on Merewether’s performance in the competition.
Lake Macquarie is still sitting comfortably on top of the competition table with 22 points.
Merewether is currently in third position with twelve points next to their name.
Sunday 13th May
Wayne Richards Park
12.00pm
Charlestown City Blues FC v Adamstown Rosebud JFC
The second match for Round 8 of the Herald Women’s Premier League saw Adamstown Rosebud JFC take home the three points against Charlestown City Blues FC.'
With kick-off at 12pm the weather had heated up for the second game, but the cool breeze stuck around to give the players some relief from the heat.
Adamstown started the game strongly in the attacking third, and an early shot in the 10th minute led to a goal from Meaghan McElligot.
After their first goal Adamstown continued to gain possession, but as the half progressed Charlestown were also strong in gaining possession of the ball.
Both teams were passing well throughout the defensive and midfield lines, but neither team was able to capitalise on their chances on goal.
The first half came to a close with Charlestown beginning strong in terms of attacking play, but it was Adamstown who stayed on top coming into the second half.
After a short break, both teams took to the field to again try and gain the upper hand and score a goal.
Adamstown once again started well in their attack and Ashley Wilson put her team further ahead in the 54th minute, slipping a shot past the Charlestown goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
As the second half progressed Adamstown continued to dominate in the attacking third.
In the 75th minute Adamstown were awarded a direct free kick that was taken by former Newcastle Jets W-League player Amber Nielson.
Just outside of the box, Nielson took the shot and fired the ball into the top right corner with a beautiful kick.
That was the final goal of the game, but Adamstown continued to attack in hopes of scoring another goal.
As the game came to a close it was clear that Adamstown had dominated the attacking play in the second half.
The final scoreline read 3-0 in favour of the red and green, and Charlestown left disappointed.
Adamstown coach, Shelley Youman, was happy with the result and especially pleased with her team’s performance in the second half.
After a slow first half for Adamstown, Youman said her girls picked it up in the second half and held onto possession better and were passing it around well.
Charlestown coach, Kelvin Faith was disappointed in the result as he felt his team was the better side in the first half.
They held possession much better, but are lacking an attacking player to score goals.
There will be a focus on attacking play throughout training sessions after a focus on defensive work throughout previous weeks.
Faith said there are “little niggling injuries throughout the team that make it harder to play the full 90 minutes”.
Adamstown are currently sitting second on the table, just behind competition front-runners Lake Macquarie, on 18 points.
Charlestown is in fourth position just behind Merewether, on eleven points.
Sunday 13th May
Wayne Richards Park
2.00pm
Football Mid North Coast v Valentine FC
Football Mid North Coast had a win over Valentine FC in the final match for Round 8 of the Herald Women’s Premier League.
After a close game between the two teams the final scoreline read 2-0 in favour of the home side.
Both teams started the game strongly, but an early penalty to Football Mid North Coast gave them an opportunity to open the scoring.
Ex-Matilda and Newcastle Jets W-League assistant coach, Joey Peters, stepped up to take the shot but unfortunately missed and the ball went out for a goal kick.
Valentine also started strongly and had some chances on goal early on.
In the 40th minute Samara Schmitzer of Football Mid North Coast and Alice Noble of Valentine were shown red cards and given their marching orders after a scuffle during gameplay.
The first half continued fairly evenly between both teams, however neither side managed to capitalise on their attacking chances. The half finished with the scoreline locked at 0-0.
The second half started strongly again between both teams and Football Mid North Coast continued to attack and have shots on goal, but it was Valentine’s goalkeeper, Rebecca Miller, who kept them in the game.
Valentine also played a strong attacking game. With great teamwork and passing throughout the midfield and attack, they were able to create many chances on goal.
This teamwork shows that after a tough start to the season Valentine are coming together as a team and working hard to get a win under their belt.
As the end of the game drew near it was Football Mid North Coast who capitalised on their attacking chances in the 88th minute, when a cross from Joey Peters found Chloe Foley in the middle who caught the ball on her chest and then hit it on the volley into the back of net.
Their second goal came shortly after when Joey Peters slotted a shot past the Valentine goalkeeper and into the goalmouth.
Both teams played well and put in 100% effort throughout the entire game, but it was Football Mid North Coast who came out in front.
Coach Terry Burn was happy to take the three points after what he felt was a disappointing first half.
After changing the formation to accommodate ten players, the girls settled into the change better in the second half.
Burn thought this half was better for his team, but they could have scored more goals as they had more attacking chances in the second part of the match.
Valentine coach Mick Day was happy with his girls’ performance and felt the game was their best so far this season.
Day said, “I am very proud of the girls today. They played great and entertaining football and didn’t get provoked to lower their standards and get involved in any off the ball incidents. This game, I believe, is the turning point for the girls, and we look forward to achieving the goals we have set for the back half of the season.”
Round 9 of the Herald Women’s Premier League will be held next Saturday the 19th of May and will be hosted by Lake Macquarie at Macquarie Field.
