Exciting year for women’s football ahead as fixtures announced for 2024 NPL Women’s NNSW

Defending double winners Broadmeadow Magic will start their NPL Women’s NNSW title defences against New Lambton FC at Magic Park.

Northern NSW Football announced the draw for its 2024 premier competitions on Thursday, including its top tier women’s competition.

Magic, who downed Newcastle Olympic in last year’s grand final to win the championship after they had impressively secured the premiership, will host the Golden Eagles on Saturday 24 February.

Next year will be the third NPL Women’s NNSW season, following a massive year for women’s football off the back of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cupᵀᴹ.

Elsewhere in round one, Charlestown Azzurri FC will host fellow semi-finalists Maitland FC at Lisle Carr Oval, Mid Coast FC will take on new-look Warners Bay FC at Taree Zone Field, while Adamstown Rosebud JFC will play Newcastle Olympic FC at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility.

All first round matches will be played on Saturday 24 February. The finals series structure will remain unchanged.

It has also been announced that the inaugural NNSWF Charity Shield will take place at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Friday February 16. The one-off match will see the reigning premiers and champions Broadmeadow Magic FC up against Women’s State Cup winners Maitland FC with proceeds going to a nominated charity.

The match will be played as a double header alongside the men’s Charity Shield between NPL Men’s NNSW premiers and champions Lambton Jaffas and Men’s State Cup winners Broadmeadow Magic FC.

NNSWF General Manager Football Operations Liam Bentley said the 2024 NPL Women’s NNSW campaign would be an exciting one for football in the region after the success of Australia and New Zealand hosting the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cupᵀᴹ.

“2023 was a massive year for women’s football in Australia with the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cupᵀᴹ being played here,” Bentley said.

“It was a great opportunity for football fans in our region to support the best female players across northern NSW in the biggest ever year for women’s football in our country.

“Last year’s NPL Women’s NNSW competition was another huge success. But there have been some significant personnel changes at a number of clubs so it really could be anyone’s to win.

“We hope to continue the World Cup momentum into the 2024 season and want the football community to come out and support teams that may have future Matildas in their mix.

“We wish everyone all the best for the 2024 season.”

There will also be special commemorative rounds for Female Football Week as well as Make it Red Weekend for Heartbeat of Football Round, Indigenous Round, Mental Health Round and Pride Round.

NPL Women’s NNSW match days will feature first and reserve grade matches as well as the youth component of NPL Women’s NNSW – the Premier Youth League Girls competition - for under 13s, 15s and 17s.
