NPL Women’s NNSW Round Seven Review: The Magpies fly high over Adamstown, while Azzurri outclass New Lambton

Match of the Round
Adamstown Rosebud JFC 0-3 Maitland FC
Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility, Saturday 7pm

Maitland continues to soar as they secure their fifth consecutive win after they defeated Adamstown Rosebud FC 3-0 on Saturday night.

The Magpies thought they had opened their account for the evening after Georgia Amess was taken down inside the penalty area in the third minute. Amess was unable to convert from the spot as she sent the ball wide.

But the striker provided a skilful assist for teammate Bronte Peel to break the deadlock two minutes later for Maitland after she tapped in a perfectly placed cutback from Amess to send the ball past goalkeeper Olivia Sneddon.

Co-captain Tahlia Gossner doubled the Magpies' lead in the 50th minute after she slotted the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick.

Amess provided her second assist of the night for Emmeline Pepper in the 67th minute after she ducked and weaved around Adamstown’s defence and poked the ball to Pepper who sliced the ball into the goal.

Coach Keelan Hamilton was pleased to secure another three points.

“It was good to get another win,” Hamilton said.

“The performance overall was disciplined and controlled.”

Hamilton was impressed with his side’s defensive efforts but admitted that they needed to do better in front of goal.

“We defended really well and our structure was really good,” Hamilton said.

“We didn’t give Adamstown any chances throughout the 90 minutes.

“We didn’t have a bad player.

“But we were probably a little wasteful in the front third in the first half and our movement wasn’t as clinical as I would of liked.”

Despite the result, Adamstown’s coach Martin Slade was happy with how his side competed against a dominant Maitland outfit.

“I thought we were really good,” Slade said.

“Without the all we made it difficult for Maitland to do what they wanted to do.

“We identified areas we were going to try and focus on which for the most part I think we executed.

“The fact that they are a top-four team and we didn’t get smashed is a huge positive.”

Slade was proud of his side’s resilience and that they did not let the game get away from them after they conceded early in the game.

“Going down 1-0 in the first minutes of the match and then to be able to hold ourselves and not let things completely slip away for us is a big step up for us.

“We are building something.”

The Magpies remain in second position on the table, one point behind league leaders Broadmeadow Magic.

Maitland will hope that they can keep the good times rolling when they return home to Cooks Square Park to host Charlestown Azzurri.

Rosebud continues to sit fifth on the table, six points clear of New Lambton in sixth and three points outside of the top four.

Adamstown will hope to bounce back when they travel to Darling Street Oval to take on Newcastle Olympic.

Charlestown Azzurri 4-1 New Lambton FC
Lisle Carr Oval, Saturday 4pm

Charlestown Azzurri made it three from three after a 4-1 victory over struggling New Lambton FC on Saturday.

The blows continued for the Golden Eagles after Serena Carter sustained a broken and dislocated elbow in training which will see her sidelined for several months.

New Lambton coach Aaron Stedmen was unable to be at the match as he was away, which meant manager Meaghan May and Leon Davies led the side on Saturday.

Jessie Gentle opened the scoring for the Blues in the 20th minute with a spectacular strike into the top left-hand corner of the net.

New Lambton goalkeeper Ally Boertje was unable to completely clear the ball away which saw Azzurri pounce, using their physicality to outmuscle the Golden Eagles and put themselves in front.

Ella Joyce netted her eighth goal of the season eight minutes later with a strong low and hard hit to slice past Boertje.

New Lambton struck back minutes into the second half to take the scoreline to 2-1. Tara Andrews rolled around her defender inside the penalty area before she cut the ball across the ball for Regan Bradley to nudge into the back of the net.

But in the 84th minute, Azzurri’s lead was extended with an own goal from New Lambton defender Hannah Bouke.

Substitute Sienna Fraser-Kelly put the icing on the cake for Azzurri in the 92nd minute after she slid onto the ball and sliced it into the goal.

Despite the result, Stedman was pleased with the part of the match that he saw.

“From what I watched there were still positives that we took away,” Stedman said.

“Again it’s one of those things that if we were more clinical in front of goal, the result could have been different.”

Azzurri remains in third position on the table with 13 points and is three points away from league leaders Broadmeadow Magic.

Charlestown will hope to continue their momentum when they travel to Cooks Square Park to take on Mailand FC.

New Lambton continues to sit sixth on the table and will be desperate to turn things around when they return home to Alder Park to host Magic next weekend.

Newcastle Olympic 10-0 Warners Bay FC
Darling Street Oval, Saturday 4pm

Newcastle Olympic bounced back in style with a dominant 10-0 victory against Warners Bay FC.

Kiera Bainsfair opened the scoring for Olympic in the 13th minute after she charged towards the goal and struck the ball past goalkeeper Mia Wallace.

Sophie Walmsley doubled Olympic’s lead in the 26th minute with a spectacular strike from outside the penalty area that snuck under the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Allanah Russell took the scoreline to 3-0 three minutes later before Marion Dunbabin extended Olympic’s lead again just before half time.

Russell struck again in the first minute of the second half before Jemma House netted her first of the afternoon a few minutes later.

The scoreline continued to move in Olympic’s favour as Dunbabin scored her second of the afternoon before Russell secured a hat trick to take the score to 8-0.

Things went from bad to worse for the Panthers after Wallace fouled Dunbabin inside the penalty area which resulted in a penalty awarded for the home side.

House calmly converted from the spot before she secured her second hat trick of the season in the 80th minute to put the final nail in the coffin for Warners Bay.

Olympic remains in fourth position on the table with 12 points four points behind league leaders Broadmeadow Magic.

Atkins will hope his side can continue their form when they host Adamstown Rosebud FC next Sunday.

The Panthers remain seventh on the table with three points and are nine points outside of the top four.

Swinkles will be desperate for his side to turn things around when they travel to Taree Zone Field next Sunday to take on Mid Coast FC.

Warners Bay remain in seventh position and will hope that they can bounce back when they travel to Taree Zone Field to take on Mid Coast FC next weekend.

Atkins will hope his side can continue their momentum when they go head-to-head with Adamstown Rosebud JFC.

Mid Coast FC 0-6 Broadmeadow Magic FC

Mid Coast’s horror start to the season continues after they were downed 0-6 to league leaders Broadmeadow Magic on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the home side advantage, Middies were unable to stop Magic as they suffered their fifth straight loss in five matches.

Broadmeadow started the match with a bang as Mercedes McNabb opened Magic’s account at Taree Zone Field in the third minute.

Captain Kalista Hunter charged down the pitch and sliced the ball through Mid Coast’s defensive line and into the path of McNabb, who struck the ball past goalkeeper Grace Davies.

Things went from bad to worse for Mid Coast after they conceded an own goal off a corner kick in the fifth minute to double Magic’s advantage.

Lilly-Jane Babic tripled Magic’s lead in the 35th minute after she got in behind her defenders and smashed the ball into the goal.

Broadmeadow kept their foot on the gas in the second half as Madison Gallegos extended the scoreline to 4-0 in the 67th minute with a spectacular strike from the edge of the penalty area.

McNabb netted her second for the afternoon in the 69th minute after she ducked and weaved in between her defenders before she let off a powerful shot that soared past Davies.

Babic put the cherry in top for her Broadmeadow side after she scored her second and the final goal of the match in the 95th minute with a solid strike between the legs of Davies and into the back of the net.

Mid Coast will continue to search for their first points of the season when they host Warners Bay in a bottom-of-the-table clash next Sunday.

Magic will stay on the road as they travel to Alder Park to face New Lambton FC as they fight to stay at the top of the table.
