Insurance
If you’re looking at this page, we hope that whatever has happened isn’t too painful. If you’ve been injured and want to make a claim, please follow these steps after reading the information below.
Our commitment to you
We’re committed to providing the football community in northern NSW with a first-class Sports Insurance program while keeping registrations affordable.
As part of your annual football registration, you receive a level of personal accident insurance coverage. This insurance provides a basic safety net for players, coaches, referees and volunteers in the event of an injury sustained during football activities.
However, it is important to understand that this is not private health insurance or comprehensive income protection. Instead, it is a modest level of coverage funded through a relatively small portion of registration fees - approximately $10 to $15 per person per year. The level of cover provided reflects this contribution and should not be compared to private health insurance, which typically includes hospital stays and a wider range of medical treatments.
What does the insurance cover?
The NNSWF insurance program provides basic protection for football-related injuries including:
- Non-Medicare Medical Expenses – Covers up to 75 per cent of eligible expenses (e.g., physiotherapy, ambulance transport, dental) with a maximum claimable amount of $2,500. Medicare-related costs (e.g., GP visits, X-rays and surgery fees) are not covered.
- Loss of Income Protection – Provides up to $300 per week (85 per cent of net income) for up to 52 weeks after a 21-day waiting period. Different rates apply for students and non-income earners.
- Capital Benefits – Lump sum payments for serious injuries, including up to $750,000 for paraplegia or quadriplegia.
Consider Additional Cover for Greater Protection
While this insurance provides a basic safety net, it does not cover all medical expenses, salary continuance or broader personal injury needs. Participants should assess their individual circumstances and consider additional insurance options such as:
- Private health insurance – Covers hospital stays, surgeries and specialist treatments.
- Salary continuance insurance – Provides income protection beyond the basic loss of income benefit.
- Personal Accident Top-Up Cover – Increases your Weekly Injury Benefit under the national program.
We do recommend all players and official take out their own private health insurance and life insurance over and above the coverage provided under this plan. Our insurance brokers Gow-Gates can assist with other insurance requirements.
